Costa Rica protect a larger proportion of its land than any other country in the world! In 1970 came a growing acknowledgment that something unique and lovely will disappear and a systematic effort was begun to save the wilderness. That year Costa Rica formed a national park system that won worldwide admiration. The Costa Rican law declared inviolate 10,27% from the country's territory. An additional 17% from land consist of forest reserves, wildlife refuges, and Indian reserves. So, the country's representative sections of all major habitats and ecosystems are protected for tomorrow's generations!

Green landThe National Conservation Areas System

The National Conservation Areas System protects more than 186 areas, including 32 national parks, eight biological reserves, 13 forest reserves, and 51 wildlife refuges. The most visited national parks of Costa Rica are Manuel Antonio National Park, with its beautiful beaches, Braulto Carrillo, with its rainforest beside a highway, Tortuguero, a watery forested world teeming with wildlife, Irazu, where on a clear day you can see both the Caribbean and the Pacific coasts, and Poas, where you can look into a steaming crater and see the earths crust being rearranged!
