Seasons & Weather in Costa Rica - Best Time to Visit Costa RicaCosta Rica is a small country located in Central America that gained very much in popularity on the international travel scene due to the numerous national parks teeming by exotic wildlife and because of the very convenient all inclusive vacation packages provided by a wide range of luxury hotels settled on the Pacific Coast, especially in the province of Guanacaste. To the high appreciation of this country amongst holiday makers contribute also the warm tropical weather and the low variations between seasons.
The weather in Costa Rica is typical for tropics, which means that the climate is generally warm and humid and the seasons are splited in two: one wet (associated with winter) and one dry (equivaled with summer). The summer stretches from December to April and the winter from May to October. The rainy season coincides largely with the Atlantic hurricane season and this fact brings plenty of rainfalls, especially on the Caribbean side and the central part of Cordillera Mountains. However, the country is bordered in east by the Atlantic Ocean, in west by the Pacific Ocean and the central part is pretty mountainous (with numerous volcano ranges) and as result it features several micro-climatic zones. The annual temperatures are roughly 21 - 27 degrees Celsius (70 - 81 degrees Fahrenheit), the coolest months of the year are November, December and January, while March, April and May are the warmest. Because of the large diversity of the terrain and of different influences, there are several special characteristics, as following: the central valley (where is located the capital city of San Jose) is considered as benefiting on the best weather, with an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius (72 degrees Fahrenheit) and cooling coastal breezes; the northwestern region (where is located Guanacaste) is more dry and the average temperature is 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit); in the highlands of the northern and central mountainous areas (where is located Monteverde and Arenal Volcano) the average temperature is 13 degree Celsius (55 degrees Fahrenheit) and the climate is very wet, reason why the region is covered by lush misty forests which are commonly named "cloud forests"; finally, the Caribbean side has a particular climate with numerous rains due to the trade winds that keep the weather hot and humid year-round, so there isn't a true dry season.
But when is the best time to visit Costa Rica? The answer depends largely on the purpose of the trip and the region which is going to be explored. Generally the high season is assimilated with the dry season and therefore the best time to visit the north Pacific coast, central Pacific coast, Nicoya Peninsula, the central valley with San Jose, and the entire western side is between December and April. Tourists interested in visiting Arenal Volcano are advised to go from May to November (September and October offering the best conditions), while the Monteverde region is great from January to May. Holiday makers who want to see the northeastern part (where is situated the Tortuguero National Park) and the Caribbean coast are guided to take tours in February – March or September – October.
As in any top tourist destination, the peak season is also the most expensive because of the many travelers who take trips to the main resorts of the country. Usually, vacation packages to Costa Rica are affordable throughout the year, but off season can be bought sometimes at very cheap prices due to the fact that in some regions are settled multitude of resort complexes. One of the best examples is the Guanacaste region where in the last few years have been developed plenty of high end hotels offering all inclusive deals, which are highly demanded on the North American travel scene. The best interval for going on holiday in this part of the country is considered December – April, but in fact the weather is excellent year-round and tourist who pick travel packages outside of this months have chance to benefit on high class accommodation and exciting activities at incredible low prices!
